Aspects of Knowledge Management to establish standards?

In the LinkedIn Group of the International Knowledge Management Standards and Accreditation Association (IKMSAA) Denise B. asks:

For which aspects of KM do you expect to establish standards? Is it too early to establish standards for a field that continues to evolve? How will this association align with international standards granting organizations? Will you apply to become a standards granting body? Or, do we mean standards in a different sense? We are proposing a similar initiative for knowledge management education standards to AIIM, which is an established national standards developing body. We are thinking that standards should be available for (1) knowledge management curriculum; (2) knowledge management faculty; (3) knowledge management program administration and governance; and (4) knowledge management practitioner competencies at different levels and for different areas of specialization. Not directly related to professional education – standards may also be proposed for (3) organizational maturity levels, addressing all facets of knowledge management, and assuming that an organization has established their own internal knowledge management goals and strategies, and that they are well aligned with their business goals. Standards and certification also require some form of certification process and program administration. Is this one of the services that IKMSAA would propose to provide? We were looking at ABPMP as a good practice model. I totally agree with Dave Snowden – there are far too many marketing and ‘for profit’ training initiatives. Standards can help to ensure that anyone who is practiciting KM has attained some level of professionally recognized certification. Thanks for considering my questions. If you are focused on KM education standards, I encourage you all to join in or tune in to KMEF 2012 – Washington DC July 26-27. This will be a topic of conversation. Best regards, Denise
