1) "Hokuriku" stands for the Japanese region in which JAIST is located. (Japanese: 北陸地方; English: Nordland Region)
2) Until 2016 the School of Knowledge Science was known as Graduate School of Knowledge Science (est. 1996). It was created as a result of the reorganization of the graduate schools at JAIST which are now combined under the Graduate School of Advanced Science and Technology.
3) Predecessors of the Department of Knowledge Science (1996-2008) are the Department of Social Knowledge Science (Japanese translated: Department of Knowledge Society Systems) and the Department of Knowledge System Science (Japanese translated: Department of Knowledge System Fundamentals)
4) The "Transformative Knowledge Management" Research or Academic Area (2022-present) was formerly known as "Knowledge Management" Area (2016-2022). Predecessors: Social Knowledge area (basic; 2011-2016), Knowledge Media area (basic; 2011-2016), System Knowledge area (basic; 2011-2016), Service Knowledge area (applied; 2012 or 2013-2016), ...
5) The Knowledge Science Education and Research Center (1998- 2011) is the university's fourth joint educational and research facility hosted by the Graduate School of Knowledge Science. It promotes research and development of knowledge creation media support systems. In 2011 it was renamed to Lifestyle Design Research Center.
6)The majors of the degrees/programs in Knowledge Science are organized by the corresponding departments
7) The International Symposium on Knowledge and Systems Sciences (KSS) was initiated by the JAIST School of Knowledge Science. It became the annual meeting of the International Society for Knowledge and Systems Sciences (ISKSS) which was formally established at the fourth KSS in 2003.
8) From 2003-2008 the COE Center was a cooperation between JAIST (School of Knowledge Science, School of Materials Science, and the School of Information Science) and domestic / international research institutes, national and local government, companies, and academic societies.
9) From 2003-2008 ISKSS was associated with the JAIST Center for Strategic Development of Science and Technology (COE Center).
