TU Dublin was created in 2019 though a merger of the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown (ITB; Irish: Institiúid Teicneolaíochta, Baile Bhlainséir; est. 1999), the Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT; Irish: Institiúid Teicneolaíochta Tamhlacht, est. 1992), and the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT; Irish: Institiúid Teicneolaíochta Bhaile Atha Cliath; est. 1978). From 2011-2018 the tree institutions worked together in a formal alliance under the name “Technological University for Dublin (TU4Dublin).
