CDU was established in 2003 by the merger of the Northern Territory University (NTU), the Menzies School of Health Research (est. 1985), the Centralian College (est. 1993), and the Northern Territory Rural College (NTRC; est. 1979 as Katherine Rural College).
NTU was established in 1989 by the merger of the University College of the Northern Territory (UCNT; est. 1987) and the Darwin Institute of Technology (est. 1974 as Darwin Community College)
