1) Jimma University (JU) was established in 1999 by a merger of Jimma College of Agriculture (est. 1952) and Jimma Institute of Health Sciences (est. 1983)
2) JIT (est. 1997 as Faculty of Technology (FoT)) is rooted in the Jimma Institute of Healthy Science (est. 1983)
3) The Faculty of Computing and Informatics was formerly known as School of Computing. It was created in 2012 by the merger of the Departments of Information Technology and Computer Science (est. 2005 and 2003)
4) The Department of Information Science was established in 2005/6 as Department of Library and Information Science (later: Department of Information Studies (2006/7) and Department of Information Science (2008/9)); Previously it was part of the Faculty of Natural and Information Science (2005-09), the Institute of Technology (2009-11,) and the College of Natural Sciences (2011-2017)
The College of Natural Science, formerly the Faculty of Natural & Information Sciences, was established in 2009 due to a re-structuring of the Faculty of Education.
5) The MSc in Information Science stream "Information & Knowledge Management" was previously known as MSc. in Information and Knowledge Management’ (launched in 2011)
