The Knowledge Management in/for the Legal Profession conference series, also often branded as KM Legal…, is organized by the conference division of the Ark Group (previously Ark Group’s Managing Partner Magazine) since 2000. In the past the conferences have been regularly organized in the USA, continental Europe and the UK, and for a short period in Australia.

  • USA & Canada
Established in 2005, the Knowledge Management for the Legal Profession (KM Legal) conference in Chicago (USA), formerly in New York (USA), since 2020 branded as KM Legal, formerly also known as the Knowledge Management in the Modern Law Firm conference, for several times organized in Chicago, will feature real-world case studies featuring a myriad of perspectives from some of today’s leading law firms. Interesting observation: In 2023 the long-standing chairs of KM Legal in the USA established itstheir own legal Knowledge Management conference in New York, scheduled one week before Ark Group’s conference in Chicago.

    Related conferences:

2006-2007: The two-day Integrating Information & KM Architectures in the Legal Profession and one-day KM Legal 201: Moving Beyond KM Technology conferences in Toronto (Canada) explore the intersection of legal Information Management with Knowledge Management and beyond
  • Europe
2000-2019: The KM Legal UK conference in London (United Kingdom), from 2008-2014 branded as KM Legal conference, formerly known as Knowledge Management for the Legal Profession conference (2003-2007) and Knowledge Management in the Legal Profession conference (2000-2002), aims to address the most pertinent challenges facing law firm knowledge management professionals and demonstrates best practice from a range of leading firms. In 2018 KM Legal UK was held together with the Knowledge Management UK (KMUK), branded as Knowledge Management Summit (KM Summit). In 2019 KM Legal UK has become one KM Summit stream next to two others. In 2020 not anymore. Also in 2019 KM Legal UK was supplemented by the Knowledge Management Legal and Professional Support Lawyer (KM Legal & PSL) in order to bring programme highlights from Ark’s London event to legal knowledge managers and professional support lawyers based in the north of England.

2007-2017, 2023: The KM Legal Europe conference in London (United Kingdom), formerly in Amsterdam (The Netherlands), unitl 2010 known as Knowledge management for the European legal profession conference, is an event that brings together like-minded knowledge management professionals from law firms across the continent to share best practice, and discuss and debate the latest Knowledge Mangaement developments, the key challenges and issues, and the emerging trends that will affect law firm knowledge management business decisions. In 2018 KM Legal Europe was cancelled and merged with KM Legal UK. Together with the Knowledge Management UK (KMUK) it formed the newly established Knowledge Management Summit (KM Summit). In 2023 it was re-established as “inaugural KM Legal Europe” in London, the week before the KM Legal in the USA. Interesting observation: In 2023 KM Legal Europe is scheduled in the same week as the new legal Knowledge Management conference, established by the long-standing chair of Ark Group’s KM Legal in the USA.

    Related conferences:

2002-2019: The Professional Support Lawyer (PSL) conference in London (United Kingdom), formerly the The Role of Professional Support Lawyer(s) conference, provides professional support lawyers with the tools to add value, develop a uniquely positioned career and cultivate their roles for the future.

2007-2008: The Knowledge capture and retention in law firms conference in London (United Kingdom) will examine how best to create, capture and retain knowledge and know-how by hearing from those who are leading the way and driving innovation in this field. By delving beyond the theory deep into the practical application of what actually works and what doesn’t, delegates will leave this event inspired and armed with a wide range of practical ideas to implement in their own firm.

2006: The two-day Integrating knowledge management into strategic business processes (Capitalising on Knowledge Management to add value and drive efficiency in law firms) conference with workshop, which is inspired by discussions at the ‘Knowledge management for the legal profession’ conference in April 2006, explores in depth the wealth of issues surrounding integration and collaboration. It will provide you with all the inspiration and strategy you need to see through the integration of knowledge management into your firm’s business processes.
