The European Conference on Information Literacy (ECIL) and its sister conference, the International Conference on Information Literacy (ICIL or ICIL-Africa), aim to bring together researchers, information professionals, media specialists, educators, and policy makers from around the world to exchange knowledge and experience and discuss current issues, recent developments, challenges, theories, and good practices in the fields of Information Literacy, Media Literacy and Lifelong Learning.

ECIL is co-organized by the Department of Information Management of Hacettepe University, Turkey, the Department of Information and Communication Sciences of the University of Zagreb, Croatia, and, since 2017, by the Information Literacy Association (InLitAs), France. ICIL is organized by the Library and Information Service Department, North-West University, South Africa.

Since 2018, ECIL has been held in alternating odd-numbered years, while ICIL is held in even-numbered years.
