Monthly Featured

The International Conference on Formal Ontology in Information Systems (FOIS), organized by the International Association for Ontology and its Applications (IAOA), is a meeting point for all researchers with an interest in formal ontology. It aims to be a nexus of interdisciplinary research and communication for researchers from many domains engaging with formal ontology. Common application areas include conceptual modeling, database design, knowledge engineering and management, software engineering, organizational modeling, artificial intelligence, robotics, computational linguistics, the life sciences, bioinformatics and scientific research in general, geographic information science, information retrieval, library and information science, as well as the Semantic Web.

FOIS originated from the Project ONTOINT (Ontological Tools for Heterogeneous Knowledge Organization and Integration) funded by the Italian National Research Council which was the main conference organizer until IAOA was founded in 2009.

Prior to 2021 FOIS was held biennially.

The Joint Ontology WOrkshops (JOWO) is a venue of workshops and tutorials that, together, address a wide spectrum of topics related to ontology research, ranging from Cognitive Science to Knowledge Representation, Natural Language Processing, Artificial Intelligence, Logic, Philosophy, and Linguistics. JOWO’s mission is to provide a platform for the diverse communities interested in building, reasoning with, and applying formalised ontologies in the wide spectrum of Information Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Philosophy, Linguistics and Cognitive Science, both in theory and applications. JOWO is organized annually, biennialy in conjunction with FOIS

The Workshops on Modular Ontologies (WoMO), exclusively devoted to the topic of modularity in ontologies, have been organized annually from 2006 to 2015. From 2010 to 2014 in conjunction with FOIS.
