Challenges in knowledge management education

155 views 1 comment

Abstract: One of the characteristics of knowledge-based economy is the rapid pace of change that affects our lives, organizations, and society in general. The rapid increase in communication technologies and information has created an overflow of information and knowledge. Cultural, social, and technological changes and economic pressures have produced a fast-changing environment, particularly in the work place.

As knowledge management evolves, educational institutions around the world are beginning to develop programs in response to the market needs of knowledge management professionals. These programs have taken different approaches: Library and Information Science, Information Technology, Communication Studies, or Management. The challenges in knowledge management education are diverse: defining the skills and competencies of knowledge management professionals based on the market needs; educating information professionals rigorously enough so that they will be able to meet the demands of knowledge management work; integrating and coordinating different disciplines that are the foundations of knowledge management: Library and Information Sciences, Communication Studies, Cognitive Science, Management, among others; and establishing the position of the Library and Information Science profession in the design of knowledge management programs. The proposed panel will discuss many of these issues and challenges.
